Women on Wings has one clear aim: to co-create one million jobs for women in rural India

Why: India: a large and rapidly expanding global economic power. The middle class is growing along with it. Yet, the underclass lives on just two dollars a day. There is very little paid work in rural India. Families lack income: there are high levels of poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy.

Women on Wings co-creates one million jobs for women in rural India. A job means an income, economic autonomy and an escape from the cycle of poverty. Research shows that women spend their income on their families. Children can go to school, which increases their chances of a better future.

How: ’Human Capital’ is the core of what we provide. We provide business consultancy to Indian social entrepreneurs that create employment for women in rural India. Our volunteer experts share their time and skills pro bono. They have 15+ years of experience in e.g. marketing, finance, product development, production, retail, food, supply chain management.

What: We scale Indian social ventures, our business partners. Either through ‘1 on 1’ consultancy: our volunteer experts work – on site and off site – with the business partners to support scale their business. Or we bring together multiple business partners facing similar issues and work on solving those. The aim is the same: improving the business of Indian social enterprises, so more products will be sold and more jobs are created. Thus, we co-create lasting impact.

    Women on Wings impact

Since the start in 2007, Women on Wings has co-created 207,500 jobs for women in rural India. A job and an income provide women in rural India with greater self-sufficiency, purchasing power and a better social position. But these 207,500 jobs have a far larger impact: it also means two meals a day and better livelihoods for 207,500 Indian families. As an extra result, 622,500 children are in (a better) school thanks to the fact their mothers have a job with an income.

Her Majesty Queen Máxima at the 5th anniversary of Women on Wings

“If you invest in a woman, you invest in a whole family. Women on Wings starts where others normally stop; sharing knowledge and skills is just as important as micro-finance.”

    Ilan Vuddumalay, C&A Foundation

“Through this partnership with Women on Wings, we want to enable more women to earn their own income. Economic independence for women means more children can go to school, more meals per day for their families and communities, and an overall better standard of living for them and future generations.”

Anjali Schiavina, Founder and CEO, Mandala Apparels

“Each session with Women on Wings brings around a lot of clarity. We work mainly intuitively and Women on Wings looks at our organization from a business perspective. The session on our organization’s structure has been great. It’s a team that is building Mandala. Every step from now should be in line with the blue print for 2019 made today. I see it happen thanks to the various sessions with Women on Wings.”

Jan Anne Schelling, volunteer expert at Women on Wings

“Indian people never cease to amaze me. They’re interested, quick to implement our advice and keep me grounded. The trick is really listening to what they need. I have the knowledge and professional skills, but they know a lot more than I do when it comes to practical issues. It’s such a pleasure working in India – a wonderful, incredible and culturally diverse place to refuel from Singapore, where I work and live.”

Weaving changes life of Prabhavati from Manipur

Prabhavati, 38, is a weaver from Imphal district of Manipur, in the north east of India. She works on fly shuttle loom. “I learned weaving when I was 15 from my elder sister Pramu. She inspired me to do weaving. Being a single woman is very challenging in society but weaving gives me great pleasure plus an income”, she shares. She has studied till class 12th. She stays with her mother and sister.

    Meeting the customers

Prabhavati is one the female artisans from Manipur that work with Women on Wings’ business partner Rangsutra Crafts. Recently she and a few other female artisans from Manipur came to the Dastkar Bazaar in Delhi where Rangsutra Crafts has a permanent stall. Prabhavati: “I have come out from Imphal for the first time. I’m having a lot of fun and I’m very proud to see products made by us drawing such appreciation from customers. It’s really heartwarming.”

    Hoping for peace and work

It’s not just the work that excites her. Also the jokes in between cracked by people around and the outburst of songs that makes the Dastkar Bazaar the center of a very vibrant space. Prabhavati loves listening to the songs and shares that she hopes that the beautiful land of Manipur will be peaceful and that she and all the other women weavers will continue to work and create a better future for them and their families.

Meera Devi, an example for all women in rural India

Meera Devi once was a general village woman, now she has a job and is respected in her village and nearby villages. Meera is one of the many women in rural India that joined a Self Help Group (SHG). But she had entrepreneurial skills, eagerness to learn and ambition. She now is Secretary of a SHG, learned about dairy and animal management and earns an income thanks to her work for Women on Wings’ business partner SRIJAN.

    Bounded by traditional rural live

Meera lives with her husband and in-laws in Rampura, a village in Rajasthan. She faced all the issues that so many rural women have to live with: she was dominated by male family members and she had to live within the cultural and religious traditions of her in-laws. Her family’s income was completely dependent on whatever the men earned in agriculture and Meera was unable to support to the household income as she was not allowed to work outside the house. Two years ago, Meera came to know about SRIJAN’s SHG’s and that changed her live.

SRIJAN’s Self Help Group brings out best of Meera

Despite the fact that she did not get support of her in-laws, Meera became a very active member of the SHG. Her cluster started functioning well and she was chosen as Secretary. This not only gave Meera self-esteem and confidence, it also changed her position in her family. She was contributing to the family household thanks to her income and her in-laws finally gave her recognition and support. Through the SHG, Meera learned about dairy and animal rearing and became the Pashu Sakhi (animal friend/specialist) in her cluster.

    Doctor Sahiba

Surrounding villages came to know about the excellent skills of Meera and started asking her for advice and call her Doctor Sahiba. Meera: “Neither my parents nor I ever dreamed of me becoming a Doctor, but it all happened because of SRIJAN. They not only taught me the basics of treatment for animals but also built up confidence in me, and now I can help others who need treatment of animals.”

Today, Meera is also Secretary of Maitree Mahila Mandal, the dairy program run by SRIJAN. She earns enough money to fulfil her basic needs and continue her studies. But helping other women in distress is Meera’s primary motivation. She offers free services and training to those that cannot afford it.
